Smarter Space Utilisation with beespace

Smarter Space Utilisation with beespace

Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) discovered beespace while exploring innovative ways to improve space utilisation and deliver on its net-zero commitment by 2040. Through a previous Innovate UK–funded project, beespace had already installed several occupancy sensors on campus.

The Space Planning team at QUB is regularly tasked with finding or creating more space for staff and students. However, they wanted to determine whether additional desks and rooms were truly needed, or whether existing spaces could be better utilised.

Smart Occupancy Monitoring

To address this challenge, beespace collaborated with QUB to deliver occupancy monitoring using smart sensors.

Deployment Overview

●     20+ room sensors in the Peter Froggatt Centre

●     8 desk sensors and 2 room sensors in the Administration Building

●     1 entrance counter in the Titanic Quarter Building

These smart sensors provided accurate, real-time data about how spaces were being used, enabling the planning team to analyse utilisation patterns and occupancy trends over time.

Data-Driven Decisions and Smarter Space Utilisation

Even in the early stages, the sensors produced valuable insights. One of the building’s occupancy was much higher than initially estimated, highlighting the power of data over assumptions.

With these insights, QUB can plan more effectively, reduce unnecessary expansion, and adopt smarter working practices, all while progressing toward a net-zero campus.

Client Testimonial

“Our intention at the outset of the project was to understand what sensors are out there and how the data could provide actionable insights. beespace helped us prove that the sensors provide the data needed, especially through their ability to provide charts, trends and suggestions. Shane and the team are very knowledgeable and helpful, always accommodating and happy to provide demonstrations or answer any questions.”
